Eagle head shot.

Originally uploaded by bmwrider.

Here is a shot I took while in Homer, Alaska this summer. This eagle would set on this one pole for about 10 minutes and then fly off. About 10 minutes later he would fly back and we would photograph him in flight as he was landing on the pole. Homer is the spot to photograph eagles.
I hope to get a eagle photo set added soon.

Winter Solstice Sunrise at Buzzard Roost Arch

Today Tim Ernst and I ventured out early this morning to catch a winter sunrise at Buzzard Roost Arch.  There are only a few days a year that the sun can be seen rising through the arch and it is on or around Dec 21-23.  Today we had a break in the weather and had clear skies, so the chances of getting a sunrise today were good.  I loaded up all my camera gear last night so I would be ready for this early morning trek.  I was up there a few days ago, just to get some GPS coordnates and to get a feel of the area before I went into it at dark.

I meet Tim at the old barn near the jeep trail at 6:30pm.  I had made a wrong turn and got stuck along the way and by some miracle I was able to "rock and roll" my way out of the ditch.  This put me a few minutes behind and I was a little shook up over the event, but I carefully watched my GPS and way points and got there in time.  It was a two mile hike to the arch and most of that would be in the darkness.  My last trip up there was by way of 4 wheeler and did not take much time.  Once we made it to our destination, we had a few minutes to set up before the sun would rise.  We had about 5 to 8 minutes to get our shot before the sun got to high in the sky.  The sun rise was in the right spot and I got a nice image.  Thanks Tim for leading me to such a wonderful place.  Hope I can find a spot you have not been......wait...that will be hard!

New Photo Gallery added.

This past weekend I went to a place in the Ozarks called "Buzzard Roost".  It has a very unique set of rock formations as well as one of the tallest Natural Bridges in Arkansas.  I plan on doing a sunrise shoot there later this week and will post some images here.  Check out the snap shots from the new gallery.

2006 McNeil Journal Online!

Such as time and my lack of it, but today I loaded my McNeil Journal for all to read.  It's not a literary piece by any means, but a journal of daily life at McNeil.  I hope the journal will spark an interest in McNeil or help you re-live and experience there.  Enjoy, and as always please post comments and emails.  Thanks!
